Использовала положение первой леди для активной пропаганды Нового курса и других реформ Рузвельта, а впоследствии — идей Движения за гражданские права. После смерти мужа Элеонора выступала как публицист, писательница и правозащитник. Принадлежала к феминисткам первой волны. Участвовала в создании ООН и председательствовала в комитете, разрабатывавшем Всеобщую декларацию прав человека.
